Go From Sketch to a Customized Logo Using Adobe Illustrator
As a graphic designer, creating unique and customized logos is one of my favorite parts of the design process. In this post, I’m sharing how I go from initial sketches to a fully customized logo using Adobe Illustrator.
Step 1: Start With a Sketch
Every design begins with a sketch. Sketching is the best way to explore logo ideas and gives me a starting point before diving into Adobe Illustrator. It’s not about perfection; it’s about letting creativity flow and identifying a direction for the project.
Step 2: Copy Your Text Before Editing
Once I move into Illustrator, the first thing I do is duplicate the original text or elements I’m working with. Having a backup is essential—you never know when you might need to start over or reference the original design.
Step 3: Arrange the Layout
Before customizing any text or shapes, I arrange the elements into a layout that works best for the design. This step ensures everything feels balanced and aligned with the client’s vision.
Step 4: Simplify Paths
Here’s a pro tip: simplify your paths. Reducing anchor points in Illustrator makes it easier to customize letters and shapes, giving you more control over the final design.
Why is this Process fun for me?
This approach isn’t just about efficiency; it’s personal. I fell in love with design through drawing letters. It started in college, where I’d sketch letterforms in my Illustrator class. I’ll never forget when my professor told me, “People don’t do that anymore.”
That comment stayed with me, but it didn’t stop me. Drawing letters and customizing logos is how I entered the creative world, and it remains central to my process today.
